Walter Tuchscherer graduated from Gonzaga in University, Spokane, Washington in 1909. Due to his interest in the family brewery business, he graduated from the Hantke's Brewer's School in Milwaukee in 1915. Walter was fluent in German, and was deployed to the Siberian front in 1918 to serve as a translator for the United States intelligence division. The Knights of Columbus originated in New Haven, Connecticut in 1882. The group's expansion to Iowa was the result of the efforts of Patrick McArdle, Illinois state deputy director. The first Iowa council was established in Dubuque in May, 1900 followed by council in Davenport in September of the same year.
